Moderator: Robert Mayes, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality; Presenters: Michael T. Rupp, Midwestern University College of Pharmacy; Steve T. Simenson, Goodrich Pharmacies; Peter N. Kaufman, DrFirst

This webinar is the second in a three-part series on the role of health information technology in medication management, from prescribing to adherence.  This free 90-minute teleconference explores the impact of health IT on transmitting prescription information and dispensing a therapeutic.

Dr. Rupp began the presentations by examining how an e-prescription is received and processed and the significance of high quality patient data for the pharmacist. He shared empirical evidence of enhanced efficiency and productivity as well as a decrease in costs for those pharmacies with e-prescribing functionality. Mr. Simensonshared his first hand experience with implementing and utilizing e-prescribing. He also discussed the importance of coalition building and the changing paradigm in relationships between providers and pharmacists. Dr. Kaufman discussed the technical limitations and challenges facing e-prescribing. He examined the bi-directional relationship between providers and pharmacists and discussed potential benefits and impacts on outcomes for pharmacists reporting back to clinicians.
