Electronic Prescribing - Ready, Set, Help!

Patricia L. Hale, MD, PhD, FACP, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College and Deputy Director of the Office of Health Information Technology Transformation, New York State Department of Health, discusses the recent focus on and interest in e-prescribing.  She provides an overview of the various incentives and multitude of resources available to physicians considering adoption.The interview was conducted by William F. Bria, MD, Chief Medical Information Officer, Shriners Hospital for Children, and Chair of the HIMSS/AMDIS Physician Community.

Dr. Hale is also the author of the book, Electronic Prescribing for the Medical Practice: Everything You Wanted to Know but Were Afraid to Ask. She addresses the current state of implementation, the advantages of electronic prescribing, and stand-alone e-prescribing versus a full EHR. Dr. Hale also suggests ways to overcome some of the challenges practices may face when implementing an electronic prescribing system.

Complexities of e-Prescribing: Physician and Pharmacist Viewpoints

Patricia Hale, MD, PhD, Deputy Director, Office of Health Information Technology Transformation New York State Department of Health, Albany, NY and Mr. Kevin Marvin, RPh, Principal, Kevin Marvin Consulting LLC, Burlington, VT discuss e-Prescribing from several perspectives including physician, pharmacist and patient. Physicians and pharmacists have unique challenges in implementing and using e-Prescribing effectively and Dr. Hale and Mr. Marvin speak to these differences and offer suggestions on how to overcome them through careful project planning and collaboration. They also provide valuable insight on patient issues that will arise during the transition to e-prescribing and how to deal effectively with patient education and communication.
