Discussion with the author Dr Pat Hale

Page history last edited by Patricia L. Hale MD, PhD 14 years, 12 months ago

Dr Pat Hale's book "Electronic Prescribing for the Medical Practice: Everything You Wanted to Know but Were Afraid to Ask" provides very pragmatic information on e-prescribing.

Please share how you have used the ideas and ask Dr Hale your questions about the book and/or e-prescribing.

NOTE: You can download useful tools and sample chapters from the book at the HIMSS e-prescribing web site.

UPDATE: With the new opportunities for incentives for implementing e-prescribing here is a short list of our recommendations on what you should do best take advantage of these opportunities:

  • Consider starting e-prescribing this year to best take advantage of the Medicare MIPPA incentive program as decreases in incentives in this program start in 2011 and a decrease in reimbursement for ambulatory visits currently is planned to occur to physicians not using e-prescribing by 2012.
  • Evaluate your patient population to see which program you best qualify for (>30% for Medicaid program, >10% for Medicare)
  • Be sure any potential vendors for either atand alone e-prescribing products (Medicare MIPPA program only) or EHR products are current year CCHIT certified.  This will be critical to be sure your product remains up to date on functionality to meet "meaningful use" requirements.
  • Carefully evaluate any potential vendor to be sure they meet other restrictions. For ARRA incentives it will be critical to be sure your vendor is prepared for potential further requirements by HHS and ONC for capabilities to meet the "meaningful use" criteria.
  • Be sure your billing system will be prepared to handle Medicare electronic prescribing specific codes for MIPPA and possible new codes required for ARRA incentives.

Update on the 3rd bullet point above: stand-alone e-prescribing products are not yet CCHIT certified but the process is well underway and certification for 2008 should begin in July. Use of a certified product is not yet required for MIPPA but it may be for 2010. I'll post a Wiki on the requirements for MIPPA e-prescribing incentives next week.
